The archipelago of Spitsbergen, 1300 km from the North Pole, was discovered by William Barents in 1596. The Norwegian name, Svalbard is mentioned as early as in 1194 in Icelandic documents. Map SpitsbergenSpitsbergen  is the northern most part of Norway and offers some unique and unrivalled nature experiences. We may stay at a base camp made out of driftwood or on a ship which is purposely frozen into the ice every winter to serve as rustic accommodation. Snow scooters and dog sledges are used to venture into the islands and to get around.
